On Thursday, February 12th, the Riverdale PTA celebrated Founders’ Day; and event open to PTA members, recipients of the Founders’ Day Life Time Achievement Award and their families. The award is reserved for residents who have selflessly donated their time and energy for the benefit of our children.
This year’s recipient was long-time resident and current BOE Member, June Carelli. June has volunteered with the PTA since 1995 and has chaired many committees in this time. In addition to her support for Riverdale School, she has a volunteered for the Riverdale Recreation department where she served as Director for many years. But all of this just scratches the surface.
Kelly Norris Schofield read her nomination letter to the audience leaving out June’s name for the benefit of the unsuspecting recipient. As she moved through one achievement to the next, the realization finally hit June upon which her family came out of seclusion to join her in her moment. Once the applause subsided, a teary-eyed June humbly accepted the award, acknowledging all of the parents who volunteer and explaining that she does what she does “Because it makes her happy”. Founders’ Day honors Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler who founded the National Congress of Mothers more than 100 years ago; before women even had the right to vote. Their commitment lead to what is now known as the National Parent Teacher Association; an organization dedicated to promoting children’s health, well-being, and educational success through strong parent, family, and community involvement.
Our own Riverdale PTA is an especially active group who are best known for their fund-raising activities. Everything from book fairs, flower sales, tricky trays, pancakes breakfasts, you name it, and the effort required to coordinate such events cannot be overstated. Though most of their fund-raisers support programs or extraordinary purchases at Riverdale School, they have also run events to benefit specific Riverdale children need.
